Instructor retains world karate title

Uckfield instructor Will Miles retained his world championship title for the third successive year in the Ty-Ga karate finals held at Crystal Palace.

He won the Men’s Black Belt World Open Kumite (fighting) category, then added a Gold in the Kickboxing, Gold in the open team event and Silver in the Synchronised Team Kata (a pre-determined set of karate moves) to his tally./images/TYGA SUSSEX (2).jpg

The Ty-Ga World Championships were held at the national sports stadium in Crystal Palace.

Will, pictured right, third from left, a property manager from Halland, is an instructor along with Paul Carpenter, from Brighton, for Sussex Ty-Ga Karate which trains in Uckfield and Burgess Hill.

Also in the picture, from the left, are Paul Carpenter, Stuart Peal, Rob Townsend, Declan McCraken, David Prestwich and Allen Townsend.

Another Uckfield area man, Paul Adjayi, from Blackboys - who was away when the photograph was taken, struck gold in the championships in the Men’s Colour Belt Kumite. He also won a silver in the Men’s Colour Belt Kata and a silver as part of a Kumite team.

Declan McCracken from Uckfield took bronze in the Boys’ Colour Belt Kumite and bronze again as part of a Synchronised Kata team.

Will said: “Two years ago the Sussex club won six medals, last year 16 and 18 this year.

“This is a great improvement. The guys are solid and work hard week in, week out to achieve.”

Results for Sussex Ty-Ga were:

Men’s Black Belt Kumite: Will Miles 3rd Dan; Men’s Kickboxing: Will Miles 3rd Dan; Team Kumite: Will Miles, Michael Hughes, Jo Noon (Gold). Paul Carpenter, Paul Adjayi, Allen Townsend (Silver). Men’s Colour Belt Kumite: Paul Adjayi (Gold), Allen Townsend (Silver); Boy’s Colour Belt Kumite: Stuart Peal (Gold), Rob Townsend (Bronze), Declan McCracken (Bronze). Men’s Colour Belt Kata: Paul Adjayi (Silver); Synchronized Kata: Will Miles, David Prestwich, Allen Townsend (Silver); Boys’ team Kumite: Stuart Peal, Declan McCracken, Rob Townsend (Bronze).

The championships are an annual open event with teams from the UK, Portugal, Italy, Poland and Germany competing.

There were competitors from different disciplines, such as Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Jujitsu, competing throughout the day. Sussex Ty-Ga karate is a small friendly club training on Tuesdays 7 to 8pm at The Triangle Burgess Hill and on Wednesday 7 to-8.30pm at The Civic Centre Uckfield.

Students range in age from 8 to 44 and new members of any age male or female are always welcome. The Ty-Ga system is a modern martial arts which incorporates mind as well as the body, and is a great all round enjoyable work out as well as being an effective self-defence system for today’s society.
